Let's never get rid of newspapers... but let’s improve our Journalism curriculummm
Having written for ten national magazines, here and in the UK, several newspapers, including the New York Times and LA Times on issues where the headline was very important, my sympathy is for the writer of the piece knowing he, or she, was disappointed to tears when they saw what the page editor or headline writer did to their work.
Errors like these are largely due to the haste in producing dailys, but in magazines, where the production schedule is normally ten weeks, never less than eight as Editors-in-Chief love to savor new issues and generally improve them if they can have the material in-hand for two months. The "breaking story" is often the problem as the fast-moving pieces are often the ones that change in your hands, always the day the piece hits the streets. The Internet has changed that as we can repair errors, like mine this morning for having forgotten to put a tag on the piece and complete it. Well duh!
