Former Sec. of State Speaks Up

Organizing for Action
 Madeleine Albright

 Adrian --
It's hard to overstate how disastrous abandoning the Iran nuclear deal would be. But that's exactly what this administration is threatening to do.  Madame:  Why don't you try?

Now, I served as Secretary of State, but you don't have to be a foreign policy expert to know that we're all safer if Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons.  Madame:  Exactly why this classic liberal appeasement deal will not work as Bill Clinton's giving North Korea $5 billion and three nuclear reactors did not work.  Please acknowledge the outcome.

U.S.-Iranian relations are complicated, I know from experience.  Madame:  You mean too complicated for you.  I believe they are not too complicated for Mr. Trump.
I tried to begin a dialogue with Iran decades ago, but unfortunately, they weren't ready.  So you turn the screws a farther; not take them off!
So when the Obama administration -- with the support of China, Russia, and our closest allies - negotiated a nuclear accord with Iran, I understood the historic nature of this diplomatic achievement.  That you group Russia and China with our closest allies means they too are our closest allies?

Let's be clear: The deal is working. Let us be clear:  The deal is not working, witness Iran's treatment of our sailors who were in international water when capture and humiliated by them!  Are you daft?
Both the UN's independent nuclear watchdog and our own State Department have certified that Iran is adhering to the terms of the agreement.  On no inspections?  They have not gotten close to living up to the deal!  [Daft diagnosis confirmed.]
Which means, if we unilaterally withdraw from the deal, we're simply breaking our promises -- and that carries great danger on many fronts.  Deal?  What deal?  We took off the banking sanctions, gave them $150 billion in foreign currency it cost us $180 million to purchase and ship.  It that is a deal I am an Pangolin.

Security for the entire world is at stake -- we can't allow this deal to be undercut by a reckless administration.  "reckless Administration?  (should be capitalized)  You should know one when you see one having been in two.

Going back on this deal would embolden the hardliners in Iran. It would allow them to resume nuclear activities that were blocked by the deal. It would weaken our hand in the region and hamper our ability to influence the very behavior about which this administration is rightly concerned.  That you will have to explain to me as I see our "hand" stronger as a result of Mr. Trump's actions.  It is your problem.  Your chickens are coming to roost, in the immortal word of Barack's favorite pundit Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

And it would send a message to our allies and our adversaries alike that America can't be trusted to keep its word, crippling our capacity for diplomacy. If America reneges on this agreement even though Iran is upholding its commitments, why would North Korea even consider curbing their own nuclear program?  What it will send to our "allies and adverseries alike" is that the "Still In Diapers," SID party is gone and grown-ups are in charge.

This administration has already backed out of the 195-nation Paris climate accord, diminishing our international standing. Now they're considering withdrawing from a crucial nuclear agreement with Iran and five other world powers.  The Paris Climate Accord was going to peel up to $15 trillion from the American taxpayer over the next decade.  You need a course in remedial arithmetic as well as Gullible Thinking Detection 101.

The United States can't keep giving away our seat at the table and relinquishing our global leadership. We can't replace serious diplomacy with reckless threats and bluster.  You almost got it right there, Madeline as that is exactly what you and Barack Hussein Obama did for two terms following in the your great Clinton tradition.

Please join me in urging the administration to do the right thing, the responsible thing, and maintain our commitment to the Iran Deal:  Please here understand I will do nothing of kind and the link is for fools only:

Thanks, Madeleine Albright
