The Comey Matter

Don't plan on talking about anything, but James Comey tonight. The most popular parlor game in Washington, DC last week was "What will Comey say?"  With all the pre-testimony high anxiety gaspingly expressed by Democrats and media people, same thing, what happens in the US Senate hearing room today will have to be disappointing to the Democrats.  For weeks they have thought they had nailed Donald J. Trump to the barn door.

The critical issue Comey has to navigate is what President Trump said to him regarding General Flynn, who Trump fired for lying about his contacts with Russian officials.  While nothing illegal, immoral or fattening transpired in the Flynn-Russian Ambassador contacts the fact that he could not be honest about them killed his job in the White House.

Comey has hinted he was put under pressure and that he has an accurate diary of the critical meeting, but Mr. Trump has indicated he may have a recording!  As we documented in "There Are No Tapes," it has long been easy to carry a tiny digital recorder in your shirt pocket.  We have used them in interviews and research for two decades. Businessmen, law enforcement, private investigators use these machines to remind them of the content of meetings.  It is all too easy to forget something that may later prove critical.  This is such an occasion and we would be surprised if Mr. Trump were not fully equipped.  All you do is slip a device smaller than a five pack of chewing gum in your shirt pocket after flicking the switch and you have a broadcast quality recording for two to 12 hours depending on the device. Aware he was talking to a hostile person, be sure Mr. Trump has had Mr. Comey pegged for a long time...

If President Trump ordered Director Comey to quench the investigation, then Mr. Trump would have a problem in a charge of "Obstruction of Justice."  However, that would require a very limited set of words and an obvious emotion of the kind that can be well documented by an audio recording.

The truth of the matter is very likely Mr. Trump asked Mr. Comey to "back off, he's and old man, his life is over, he'll go nowhere from this, don't crush him."  It would be consistent with Comey's reaction of no reaction, a silent "fade out," of the kind he tried with Hillary Clinton.  This is the style of James Comey, a man who hides behind drapes to avoid confronting a man of whom he was afraid.  A man who is insincere.

In July of 2016 James Comey, and the world, thought Hillary would win the Presidency so he caved to power and "bravely" overlooked all her many felonies.  His key to that moment in the spotlight was given to him by his boss, Attorney General, Loretta Lynch when she met with Bill Clinton for 45 minutes at the Private Jet Airport in Phoenix. Bill's cover story he was there to play golf has been refuted by many reporter phone calls to all the courses to confirm his reservation. No record could be found. Bill stalked Loretta to make a deal to keep Hillary out of prison and their foundation intact.

Jim Comey is too smart to do or say anything that would create a real disaster for President Trump.  He may hate his guts, but Jim will tease this hearing for the last bit of drama and self-serving promotion he can squeeze while destruction derby Democrats pant for blood they will never see.  This will be like a Roy Rogers movie: The trestle is out, the locomotive safety valve is tied down! After the crash Roy will go off, into the sunset, on Trigger, singing "Happy Days Again" and that will be the fade out ending of the Comey matter.
