Today,U.S.SenatorKamalaD.Harris,amemberoftheSenateCommitteeontheBudget,releasedthefollowingstatementinresponsetoPresidentTrump’sproposedbudgetforFiscalYear2018.PresidentTrump'sBudget
“Atitscore,thisbudgetisacruelbetrayalofthemiddleclassandthreatensourabilitytoensurebasicpublicsafety,publichealth,andpubliceducation.ThisbudgetmakesclearthevaluesofthisAdministration:itprioritizesthoseatthetop,whileleavingworkingfamiliesandthemiddleclasshighanddry.
“ItreducestaxesforthewealthiestAmericanswhiletakingawaySocialSecurityfordisabledAmericansandtaxcreditsforfamilieswithchildren.Itgivescorporationstaxbreakswhileeliminatingresourcesforstudentstryingtopayforcollege.Itspendsbillionsofdollarsonawallthatwon'twork,whilecuttingaccesstohealthcareandinitiativestocurecancer.
"Iwillstandup,speakout,andfightagainstthisbudgetateveryturnjustasIwillfightagainstthisAdministration’seffortstostriphealthcarefrommillions.Wearebetterthanthis.”
BudgetImpactonCalifornia:
- Eliminatesfederalfundingfor 51communityactionprograms inCaliforniathatprovidethousandsoflow-incomeCaliforniansemergencyfood,shelter,heatingassistance,transportationandhealthcare.
- Reduces‘WorkforceInnovationandOpportunityAct’fundingbymorethan $1.3billion –resultinginmorethan 436,000Californians potentiallylosingaccesstojobtrainingandemploymentservices.
- Cuts $357millioninCommunityDevelopmentBlockGrantsthatprovideCaliforniafunding foraffordablehousing,transportation,andeconomicdevelopment.
- Makescollegemoreexpensivebyeliminatinggrantstoover 201,000Californiastudents throughtheSupplementalEducationalOpportunityGrantprogram.
- Kicks 132,700studentsinCalifornia offafter-schoolprogramsbyeliminatingthe21stCenturyCommunityLearningCentersprogram.
- EliminatestheLow-IncomeHomeEnergyAssistanceProgramwhichprovidesheating,cooling,orweatherizationassistanceto 219,000Californiafamilies.
- Deniesassistanceto 23,400Californiafamilies foraffordablehousingwhichwouldputthematimmediateriskofevictionandhomelessnessbyslashingfederalrentalassistanceprograms,includingSection8housingvouchers.
- Endsthefederalfundingthattheairportsin CrescentCity,ElCentro,Merced,andVisalia receiveundertheEssentialAirServiceprogramtoensurethatsmaller,underservedcommunitieshavecommercialairservice.
- CutsHeadStart by$101millioninCalifornia,whichwouldthrow 11,030children offhigh-qualitychildcareandearlyeducation.
- EliminatestheMigrantandSeasonalFarmworkerTrainingprogram.
