The Governor had started to intervene for the dog, but reflected on what he learned at the Sierra Club and realized he should stop because the coyote was in his own territory and they had been there first. A vision of John Muir smiling flashed across his mind.
Jerry called California Fish and Game. They captured the coyote and billed the state $2000 testing it for diseases and $5000 for relocating it.
Then the Gov. called a veterinarian who collected the dead dog and bills the State $2000 for the pickup and tests for diseases. Jerry went to the hospital and spent $5,000 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and a BandAid on the bite mark. Then the running trail was shut down for six months while Fish & Game conducted a $100,000 survey to be sure the area is free of dangerous animals.
The Governor then spent $500,000 in state funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for schools of California. The State Legislature spent $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world.
The Governor's security agent was fired for not stopping the attack and started collecting his 100% of salary pension 15 years early for his "Good Service" commendation awarded on the day he retires. The state spends $150,000 hiring and training a new agent with additional special emphasis training on the nature of coyotes.
PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million suit against the state which is quietly settled to avoid bad publicity for only $3 million.
TEXAS
The Governor of Texas goes jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks his dog. The Governor shoots the coyote with his state-issued pistol and continues jogging. The Governor has spent $.50 on one .45 ACP hollow point cartridge.
Buzzards eat the dead coyote.
And that is why California is broke while Texas thrives.
